Build Your Own Cannabis Advent Calendar: 24 Days of NYC Dispensary Picks

What you can carry, grow, and smoke under New York’s MRTA, and where Staten Island and NYC add their own rules on top.

Key Takeaways

  • A cannabis advent calendar is a 24-door countdown to Christmas with small cannabis products and smoking gear behind each door, opened from December 1 to 24.
  • NugHub doesn’t sell a ready-made one, so this guide shows you how to build your own from our Staten Island shelf.
  • Put gear like cones, tips, a grinder and a lighter behind about half the doors, and keep the cannabis doors to single cans, small packs and tins.
  • Keep every product in its original labeled, child-resistant packaging, and give the calendar only to someone 21 or older.
  • New York lets adults 21+ have up to 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrated cannabis, so a calendar of small items stays well under the limit.

December in New York runs on its own countdown. The tree goes up at Rockefeller Center (the 2026 lighting is Wednesday, December 2, according to Time Out New York), the houses in Dyker Heights go full wattage, and the ferry windows fog up on the ride home.

You won’t find a cannabis advent calendar on our menu. We don’t sell a ready-made box, and we think the homemade version is better anyway, because you choose what goes behind every door.

It’s also closer to where the idea started. German printer Gerhard Lang is widely credited with making the first printed advent calendar in the early 1900s, and he based it on one his mother made for him by hand, according to Mental Floss.

What a cannabis advent calendar is

A cannabis advent calendar is a 24-door countdown from December 1 to 24, with small cannabis products and gear behind each door.

A regular advent calendar hides a chocolate or a small toy behind each door. The cannabis version swaps in pre-rolls, single cans, rolling papers and the kind of gear people always run out of.

Think of it as a stocking stuffer that lasts 24 days. It’s a gift for an adult, and whoever opens it has to be 21 or older.

Building it yourself means every door can be something the person already likes, plus a few things they’d never buy for themselves.

How to build a cannabis advent calendar

Pick a container with 24 slots, plan which doors get gear and which get cannabis, then fill it with small items in their original packaging.

Start with something that has 24 slots. A numbered wooden or cardboard advent box from a craft store works. So do 24 small kraft bags clipped to a length of twine, or a row of small tins with the numbers written on the lids.

Measure the doors before you shop. Pre-roll tubes, 2-packs and rolling papers slide into most drawers. A 12oz can won’t, so tag each can with its number and line them up beside the box.

Plan the mix before you fill anything. We’d put gear behind about half the doors and small cannabis items behind the rest. The month stays interesting, and the calendar doesn’t turn into a pile of product.

Leave everything in its original packaging. The cannabis on a licensed menu comes in labeled, child-resistant packs, and that label is how your person knows exactly what they’re opening.

Make it festive and keep it grown up. Brown kraft paper, red-and-green twine, black tins with gold numbers and a sprig of real pine all say holidays. Skip the Santa stickers and cartoon wrap, because this is a gift for an adult and anything that looks like a kids’ calendar is easier to mix up with one.

24 days of NugHub picks, door by door

Alternate rolling gear with small cannabis items, open with our NugGrind grinder on December 1, and save the rolling tray kit for Christmas Eve.

This is how we’d fill it from our shelf in early November. Fourteen doors are gear, ten are cannabis, nothing repeats, and we marked a few New York holiday dates along the way.

We open on December 1 with our own NugGrind, a biodegradable grinder made from plant-based materials. Every cone and wrap after it needs ground flower, so it earns door 1.

The lighter lands on December 2, the same night Rockefeller Center lights its tree, so you get a little ceremony of your own.

Most people would never buy a humidity pack for themselves, which is why it’s in there. The Raw Integra Boost pack behind door 8 keeps a jar at 57% humidity and covers up to an ounce. We’re fussy about storage, so we sneak it in early.

KOA’s Sour Diesel tin on December 20 holds two mini pre-rolls and comes with a box of matches. We picked it for the strain, which has a long New York history that our Sour Diesel post covers.

Christmas Eve gets the Standing Rolling Tray Kit, an 8.5-inch tray with fold-out legs, slots for king-size and 1¼ cones, and a cone loader funnel. The cones and loader from earlier doors finally have a home.

A few of these were down to the last couple on our shelf when we checked, including the Yankees Turn kit and the Ruby Farms 2-pack. If one’s gone, swap in something the same size from our accessories or pre-roll menu.

Filling the cannabis doors with small sizes

Single cans, 2-packs, tins and small gummy packs fit the doors and keep the whole calendar to a reasonable amount of product.

Small sizes are what make this work. A single can, a 2-pack or a 1g joint fits a door and keeps 24 days from adding up to a stash.

Drinks are the easiest win, and the most seasonal. Ayrloom’s Rosé is a sparkling cider made from fresh-pressed apples and rosé grape juice, from the upstate family behind Beak & Skiff. Their Honey Crisp Cider is the lower-dose can, with 5mg THC and 5mg CBD, and it’s the closest this calendar gets to a mug of hot cider on a cold night. Our cannabis drinks guide covers the rest of the cooler.

For a gummy door, give a whole pack of Select Nano Bites its own spot instead of splitting gummies across days, so they stay in the labeled package. Select labels them fast-acting, and our fast-acting edibles guide explains what that means.

Pre-rolls fill the rest. The Ruby Farms and Aphrodite 2-packs, the Rythm Mai Tai single and the Pot & Head joint all come in small packs that tuck easily into a drawer or bag.

Your person opens one door a day. They don’t have to use what’s behind it that day, and plenty of it will still be around in January.

New York rules to know before you gift one

Give it only to someone 21 or older, keep products in their original packaging, and stay within New York’s 3-ounce and 24-gram possession limits.

Only give it to someone 21 or older. That’s the age to buy and have cannabis in New York.

New York’s Office of Cannabis Management says adults 21 and over can have up to 3 ounces of cannabis and 24 grams of concentrated cannabis, and it counts vape oil and edibles as concentrated cannabis. You can read it on OCM’s Penal Law page. A calendar of single cans, small packs and a few grams of pre-rolls stays well under both.

Buy from a licensed store. Licensed dispensaries have a window sticker with a QR code that opens the state’s list of verified stores, as Time Out New York explains, and you can also check the list on OCM’s website.

Keep the finished calendar somewhere kids and pets can’t reach. A countdown box looks like a toy from across the room, so the top shelf of the closet, next to the good ornaments, is the right spot.

Where to get advent calendar fillers on Staten Island

Everything in this guide is on the NugHub menu at 1350 Forest Ave, for pickup or delivery across Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.

Shop the gear on our accessories menu and the cannabis doors on our pre-roll and edibles menus, then pick it all up at our Staten Island dispensary or get it delivered. You’ll need a valid ID showing you’re 21 or older.

If you only grab two things this week, make it the NugGrind for December 1 and the Standing Rolling Tray Kit for Christmas Eve, then fill in the middle before the Dyker Heights crowds and the last-minute shopping rush take over your December.

Frequently Asked Questions

What goes in a cannabis advent calendar?

Small cannabis products and smoking gear, one item per door from December 1 to 24. Our build uses 14 gear doors (cones, tips, wraps, lighters, a grinder, a humidity pack and a rolling tray) and 10 cannabis doors (single cans, 2-packs, a tin and a gummy pack).

How do you make a cannabis advent calendar?

Pick a container with 24 slots, like a numbered box, kraft bags on twine or small tins. Plan which doors get gear and which get cannabis, then fill them with small items left in their original packaging.

Does NugHub sell a cannabis advent calendar?

No. NugHub doesn’t sell a ready-made one, but everything in our door-by-door list is on our menu for pickup or delivery.

What should go behind the last door?

We’d save the biggest gear item for December 24. In our build, that’s the Standing Rolling Tray Kit, which has slots for the cones and cone loader from earlier doors.

How do you keep a cannabis advent calendar away from kids?

Leave every product in its labeled, child-resistant packaging, skip kid-style decorations, and store the calendar somewhere children and pets can’t reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring cannabis from New Jersey into New York?

No. Both states have legal markets, but transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal offense even between two legal states. Buy from a licensed New York dispensary instead of carrying product over a border.

Can my employer fire me for using cannabis off duty?

Most New York employees are protected under Section 201-D. Exceptions apply to safety-sensitive roles, federally regulated transportation jobs, and federal positions, so check your specific employer’s policy if you’re unsure.

Is it legal to gift cannabis to another adult in New York?

Yes. Adults 21 and up can gift up to 3 ounces of cannabis to other adults 21 and up without any compensation changing hands. Selling without a license remains illegal regardless of amount.

Do I need a medical card to buy cannabis in New York?

No. That’s one of the most common misconceptions we hear at the counter. Anyone 21 or older with a valid government ID can shop at a licensed adult-use dispensary, no medical card required.

Can I grow cannabis at home in New York?

Yes, up to 6 plants per household (3 mature, 3 immature) for personal use, kept secure and out of public view. Specific rules can vary slightly by county, so confirm details on the OCM site.

Can police search me just because they smell cannabis?

The smell of cannabis alone is no longer probable cause for a search in New York after MRTA. Other independent, reasonable suspicion can still lead to a search, so this isn’t blanket protection.

Where can I buy legal cannabis on Staten Island?

NugHub NY is a licensed dispensary and delivery service based on Staten Island, holding one of the state’s early Social Equity licenses. Visit our Staten Island dispensary page for hours, directions, and same-day delivery details.
