What Is Kief? How to Collect It, Use It & Buy It in NYC

What you can carry, grow, and smoke under New York’s MRTA, and where Staten Island and NYC add their own rules on top.
  • Kief is the loose, sandy powder of trichomes that falls off cannabis flower, and it carries most of the plant’s THC and terpenes.
  • A three- or four-piece grinder with a mesh screen collects kief automatically in its bottom chamber.
  • You can mix kief in with flower, press it into hash, or decarb it for cooking.
  • Every licensed kief product in New York comes with a COA (certificate of analysis), the lab report that lists its cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • Licensed New York dispensaries like NugHub sell kief-infused flower, moonrocks and infused pre-rolls, in store on Staten Island or by delivery.

Unscrew the bottom of your grinder. That golden, sandy dust sitting in the last chamber is kief, and if you’ve been ignoring it for months, you’ve been sitting on the most resin-rich part of your flower.

Kief is the pile of trichomes that shake loose from cannabis flower every time you grind. Trichomes are where the plant makes its THC and terpenes, so kief is the good stuff with the leaf left behind.

Below: how to collect more of it, which tool to use, what to do with it, how it compares to hash, and where to buy it in NYC when your grinder hasn’t caught enough.

What is kief?

Kief is the loose powder of trichomes, the tiny resin glands on cannabis flower that make THC and terpenes, collected once they break off.

An image of kief, showing what it is.

Look close at good flower and you’ll see it sparkle. Those crystals are trichomes: tiny mushroom-shaped glands covering the flowers and sugar leaves. Researchers call them the plant’s metabolite factory, because that’s where cannabinoids and terpenes get made and stored (PubMed).

Every time flower gets handled, ground or shaken, some of those trichome heads snap off. Collect enough of them and you’ve got kief. Leafly defines it the same way: resin glands gathered on their own, without the plant around them.

Good kief looks like fine golden sand or light brown sugar. Open the jar and it smells like a louder version of the strain it came from, so kief from a gassy OG smells like pure fuel. Pinch some between your fingers and it gets a little tacky from the resin.

Check the color. Pale gold to light tan means it’s mostly trichome heads. Bright green means leaf got through the screen along with the trichomes. Trichomes also shift from clear to milky to amber as a plant matures, which is part of why kief from different strains looks different (PubMed).

Product What it is Texture How it’s sold

Hash Trichomes pressed or washed into a solid Soft to firm, crumbly or pliable Pressed pieces by the gram
Moonrocks Flower dipped in oil, then rolled in kief Coated in powder, tacky Small jars, a few grams each

Every licensed product in New York comes with a COA (certificate of analysis), the lab report that lists THC, other cannabinoids and terpenes. Our guide on how to read a cannabis COA shows where to look.

How do you collect kief at home?

Use a three- or four-piece grinder with a mesh screen; kief sifts through into the bottom chamber every time you grind your flower.

Your grinder does most of the work. In a three- or four-piece grinder, ground flower sits on a fine mesh screen and the trichomes fall through into the bottom chamber, the kief catcher. Two-piece grinders don’t have a screen, so they don’t collect kief at all. Our accessories guide covers which grinders are worth buying.

A few habits get you more of it:

  • Grind like you normally do and let the kief build up for a few weeks.
  • Put the whole grinder in the freezer for 10 minutes before you scrape. Cold trichomes snap off cleaner and stop clinging to the metal.
  • Scrape the chamber with the little plastic scraper that came with the grinder, or a clean card, onto a folded piece of paper.
  • Drop a clean coin into the screen chamber and shake for a minute. The coin knocks more trichomes loose.
  • Tip it into a small glass jar with a tight lid. Plastic bags hold static, and half your kief ends up stuck to the sides.

Which kief tool should you use: grinder, kief box or sift screen?

A three- or four-piece grinder covers most people. A kief box or sift screen makes sense once you’re breaking up flower or trim in bigger batches.

All three work the same way: trichomes are smaller than the plant material around them, so they fall through a mesh screen and the leaf stays on top. The difference is scale and how fine the screen is. Screen size is measured in microns, and a finer screen lets less plant material through.

Tool How it works Good for Trade-off
Three- or four-piece grinder Kief falls through a screen into a bottom chamber as you grind Everyday flower buyers Collects slowly, a little at a time
Kief box Wooden box with a fine screen on top and a drawer underneath People who go through a lot of flower or trim Takes up space; you break flower over it by hand
Sift screen A framed mesh screen you rub flower or trim across Making a batch at once Messier; more plant material gets through if you rub too hard

What can you do with kief?

People mix kief in with flower, use it to coat pre-rolls, press it into hash at home, or decarb it to cook with. A small pinch goes far.

Most people mix kief back in with their flower. A pinch adds the trichomes back that the grinder sifted out.

Some coat the outside of a pre-roll with a thin layer of concentrate and kief, which people call twaxing. Kief-infused pre-rolls and pre-ground flower come ready-made if you’d rather skip the prep.

A pinch is plenty. You can always add more next time.

Can you make hash from kief?

Yes. Heat and pressure turn kief into hash: press it in parchment paper or a pollen press, and you don’t need any solvents at all.

The simplest way: fold the kief into a parchment packet, warm it gently (a bottle filled with hot water works), and roll the bottle over the packet with steady pressure for a few minutes. The warmth softens the resin and the pressure binds it into a slab.

A pollen press does the same job with more force: it’s a small metal cylinder that squeezes kief into a hard puck. Our Concentrates Decoded guide goes deeper on hash, rosin and the rest.

Can you cook with kief?

Yes, after you decarb it: low oven heat activates the THC, and then the kief stirs into butter or oil for homemade edibles.

Raw kief is mostly THCA, which doesn’t get you high until it’s heated. That process is called decarboxylation, or decarbing. Spread the kief on parchment, bake it low and slow, then stir it into warm butter or oil.

Homemade edibles are hard to dose evenly, so for predictable milligrams, labeled edibles from a dispensary are the easier route.

What’s the difference between kief and hash?

Kief is loose trichome powder; hash is those same trichomes pressed or washed into a solid, so hash is denser and holds its shape.

Kief is the raw ingredient, and hash is what you get when you press or wash those trichomes together.

Kief Hash
Form Loose powder Solid slab, ball or puck
How it’s made Sifted off flower through a screen Kief pressed with heat, or trichomes washed out with ice water (bubble hash)
Texture Dry and sandy Soft and pliable to firm and crumbly
Common uses Mixed with flower, pressed into hash Used on its own or mixed with flower

If you’re new to concentrates, start with kief. You probably already have some in your grinder, and it mixes right in with the flower you already buy.

Where can you buy kief in NYC?

Licensed dispensaries carry it. NugHub stocks kief-infused flower, moonrocks and infused pre-rolls, in store on Forest Ave or by delivery.

These kief products were on our menu in October 2026:

  • Budd Kief Infused Pre-Ground Flower (Alien Fritter, 14g): a hybrid that comes already ground and mixed with kief.
  • SpaceBuds Moon Rocks: flower coated in oil and rolled in kief, in two varieties.
  • Infused pre-rolls from STIIIZY (the 40’s line) and Jeeter (Quad Infused) if you want it ready-made. Our best pre-rolls in NYC list breaks them down.

Browse kief and concentrates on our menu. You can also see the full lineup in our Staten Island concentrate selection guide.

Anyone 21 or older with a valid ID can shop; you don’t need a medical card. New York lets adults carry up to 3 ounces of cannabis and up to 24 grams of concentrated cannabis (NY Office of Cannabis Management). Kief counts as concentrated cannabis under state law, which defines it as “the separated resin, whether crude or purified, obtained from cannabis” (NY Cannabis Law § 3), so it falls under the 24-gram limit.

Stop by the shop on Forest Ave or order delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does kief last, and how should you store it?

Kief keeps for months in a small airtight glass jar somewhere cool and dark. Over time it darkens and loses its smell as the terpenes fade, so it’s best within the first few months. We keep our concentrates refrigerated at the shop for the same reason.

Can you eat kief without cooking it?

You can, but it won’t do much. Raw kief is mostly THCA, which needs heat to turn into THC. Decarb it in a low oven first, then mix it into butter or oil.

Is kief legal in New York?

Yes, for adults 21 and up. Buy it from a licensed dispensary, and keep it within New York’s 24-gram possession limit, since kief counts as concentrated cannabis. NORML keeps a plain-English rundown of New York’s rules.

Is it spelled kief or keef?

Both show up, along with kif. Kief is the most common spelling. The word comes from Arabic and has meant sifted cannabis resin for a long time (Wikipedia).

What’s a kief-infused pre-roll?

It’s a pre-roll with kief mixed into the flower or coated on the outside. Kief-infused pre-ground flower, like Budd’s, gives you the same mix to roll yourself.

Is kief the same as moonrocks?

No. Kief is one ingredient in moonrocks. Moonrocks are pieces of flower dipped in cannabis oil and then rolled in kief.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring cannabis from New Jersey into New York?

No. Both states have legal markets, but transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal offense even between two legal states. Buy from a licensed New York dispensary instead of carrying product over a border.

Can my employer fire me for using cannabis off duty?

Most New York employees are protected under Section 201-D. Exceptions apply to safety-sensitive roles, federally regulated transportation jobs, and federal positions, so check your specific employer’s policy if you’re unsure.

Is it legal to gift cannabis to another adult in New York?

Yes. Adults 21 and up can gift up to 3 ounces of cannabis to other adults 21 and up without any compensation changing hands. Selling without a license remains illegal regardless of amount.

Do I need a medical card to buy cannabis in New York?

No. That’s one of the most common misconceptions we hear at the counter. Anyone 21 or older with a valid government ID can shop at a licensed adult-use dispensary, no medical card required.

Can I grow cannabis at home in New York?

Yes, up to 6 plants per household (3 mature, 3 immature) for personal use, kept secure and out of public view. Specific rules can vary slightly by county, so confirm details on the OCM site.

Can police search me just because they smell cannabis?

The smell of cannabis alone is no longer probable cause for a search in New York after MRTA. Other independent, reasonable suspicion can still lead to a search, so this isn’t blanket protection.

Where can I buy legal cannabis on Staten Island?

NugHub NY is a licensed dispensary and delivery service based on Staten Island, holding one of the state’s early Social Equity licenses. Visit our Staten Island dispensary page for hours, directions, and same-day delivery details.
