Hudson Cannabis: The Hudson Valley Farm Behind Our Hash

What you can carry, grow, and smoke under New York’s MRTA, and where Staten Island and NYC add their own rules on top.

Key Takeaways

  • Hudson Cannabis is a farm in Hudson, New York, co-founded by sisters Freya and Melany Dobson.
  • It started as a hemp farm in 2017 and now grows cannabis for licensed dispensaries across New York.
  • The farm uses regenerative methods like rotating crops, planting wildflowers and composting old hemp stalks back into the soil.
  • Hudson is known for solventless hash, which is made with ice and water or pressure instead of chemical solvents.
  • NugHub carries Hudson bubble hash, hard hash, hash oil and vape carts at our Forest Ave shop and for delivery.

A good chunk of the hash on our Staten Island shelf right now comes from one farm a couple of hours up the Hudson River. Two sisters started Hudson Cannabis as a hemp farm in 2017, and most of what we carry from them today is solventless hash.

Their labels use words like bubble hash, hard hash and SHO, so we explain those in plain English further down.

Hudson Cannabis at a glance

Hudson Cannabis is a farm in Hudson, New York, co-founded by sisters Freya and Melany Dobson. It grows cannabis for licensed dispensaries statewide.

Hudson Cannabis grows on its own farm and sells wholesale to licensed dispensaries around the state, including us.

According to the Daily Gazette, about half of the company is owned by around 20 of its employees. Hudson describes itself as “founded by women, owned by farmers.”

From a 2017 hemp farm to a Hudson Valley cannabis farm

Hudson Cannabis started as a hemp farm in 2017. Today it grows about an acre of cannabis on Old Mud Creek Farm in Hudson, harvested each fall.

The Dobsons started with hemp in 2017 and grew it through 2021, mostly for CBD products. Once adult-use cannabis became legal in New York, the farm moved into cannabis.

Today the cannabis grows on Old Mud Creek Farm in Hudson, in Columbia County. The Daily Gazette counted about 3,950 plants on roughly an acre. Planting starts in May, and harvest runs from September through the end of October.

After harvest, the flower dries for about two weeks before it’s cured, trimmed and packaged, and products go to a New York lab for testing before they ship.

How Hudson Cannabis farms

Hudson farms regeneratively. That means rotating crops, growing native wildflowers and grasses, and composting old hemp stalks back into the soil.

Regenerative farming is about leaving the soil healthier than you found it. Spectrum News reported on how Hudson Cannabis does it when it visited the farm in 2023.

The cannabis is planted in a different spot each year. Perennial grasses and native wildflowers grow in the fields alongside the cannabis, and old hemp stalks get composted back into the soil.

Hudson Cannabis hash, explained in plain English

Most of Hudson’s lineup on our menu is solventless hash, made with ice and water or pressure instead of chemical solvents like butane.

Hash is made from trichomes, the tiny sticky crystals on cannabis flower. If you’ve ever seen the dust at the bottom of a grinder, that’s kief, which is the same stuff collected dry. Our guide to kief explains it.

“Solventless” just means no chemicals like butane were used to pull those trichomes off the plant. Leafly’s glossary describes bubble hash as a solid concentration of those resin glands, made with ice water. The table below covers the other terms you’ll see on Hudson’s labels.

On the label What it means
Bubble hash Trichomes knocked loose with ice and cold water, then filtered and dried into hash
Hard hash Hash pressed into a firm block instead of left loose
Solventless hash oil (SHO) Hudson’s hash rosin, heated and turned into a smooth oil
510 cartridge A standard screw-on vape cartridge that fits most vape batteries

Our concentrates guide covers how hash compares with the other extracts on a menu.

Our pick is the Monkey Business bubble hash. Rye bread is an unusual flavor for hash, and the bit of lemongrass on top makes it one of the more interesting picks on our shelf.

If oil is more your thing, the Wedding Juice SHO is the dessert of the bunch. Hudson also makes vape carts, and if you’re comparing those with other New York brands, our guide to New York vape brands can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring cannabis from New Jersey into New York?

No. Both states have legal markets, but transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal offense even between two legal states. Buy from a licensed New York dispensary instead of carrying product over a border.

Can my employer fire me for using cannabis off duty?

Most New York employees are protected under Section 201-D. Exceptions apply to safety-sensitive roles, federally regulated transportation jobs, and federal positions, so check your specific employer’s policy if you’re unsure.

Is it legal to gift cannabis to another adult in New York?

Yes. Adults 21 and up can gift up to 3 ounces of cannabis to other adults 21 and up without any compensation changing hands. Selling without a license remains illegal regardless of amount.

Do I need a medical card to buy cannabis in New York?

No. That’s one of the most common misconceptions we hear at the counter. Anyone 21 or older with a valid government ID can shop at a licensed adult-use dispensary, no medical card required.

Can I grow cannabis at home in New York?

Yes, up to 6 plants per household (3 mature, 3 immature) for personal use, kept secure and out of public view. Specific rules can vary slightly by county, so confirm details on the OCM site.

Can police search me just because they smell cannabis?

The smell of cannabis alone is no longer probable cause for a search in New York after MRTA. Other independent, reasonable suspicion can still lead to a search, so this isn’t blanket protection.

Where can I buy legal cannabis on Staten Island?

NugHub NY is a licensed dispensary and delivery service based on Staten Island, holding one of the state’s early Social Equity licenses. Visit our Staten Island dispensary page for hours, directions, and same-day delivery details.
